US Recording Machines of the 60th/70th and 80th

today I listen to the Motown 50 special edition. You know, the label that celebrates his 50th anniversary. By that way, a question crosses my mind: What types of magnetic recording equipment they used in the United States? Lets say from 1958 to the 80th What are the typically studio reel to reel machines of this time ?

Hallo Michael,

Firstly, I have to say that I’m not an American, but I have an example of an American maschine in my collection. Not a studio tape recorder, but for domestic use. This is an Ampex model 1163. I have to give this the award for being the ugliest tape recorder in my collection. This machine I was given (I wouldn’t pay money for it!) and it must have been sold in Europe, as well as USA, because this is for 220V and 50Hz. It came complete with Tape splicer, Head Demagnetiser, and glue. My personal feeling is that I would rather have a Grundig, Philips, Telefunken, Revox………………

Im Einsatz waren, jedenfalls bis Ende dr 60-iger neben den "großen" Ampex noch kleine, tragbare (die, nebenbei bemerkt, auch als Vorbild für das Design japanischer Maschinen gedient haben):

Hinter "recordist" verbirgt sich Howard Sanner, heute vermutlich der beste Kenner der Ampex-Tonbandgeräte (von den leider nicht mehr allzuvielen ehemaligen Ampex-Mitarbeitern vielleicht abgesehen).

Ich bin dort vor einigen Jahren schon zweimal gewesen und muß sagen das es schon bewegend ist an dem Platz zu stehen, wo vor vielen Jahren all das stattfand was man nur vom Radio her kannte.
