What type of TDK cassette is right for my Uher CG-350. I have TDK SA-X but is there other options?

verkar fabriksinställningen vara gjorda med de gamla DIN-referenskassetterna. Alltså innan det fanns IEC I, II osv. De kassetter som kommer närmast DIN-banden är
- Normal: BASF "röd" (LH super och ferro super LH), Agfa Super Ferro Dynamic (utan "I"), Philips Super Quality och Super Ferro (silver, utan grön rand)
- Krom: BASF chromdioxid (utan "II"), Agfa Stereo Chrom, Philips Chromium
- FeCr: BASF ferrochrom, Agfa Carat, Philips Ferro Chromium, Sony Ferrichrome

Jag skulle köra med Agfa för normal-, BASF för krom- och Sony för ferrokrom-inställningen eftersom det är de sorter som är mest stabila och funkar än idag. Men man tager ju vad man hittar på loppis...

TDK-banden kommer inte ge dig naturlig återgivning med denna apparat, särskilt SA-X som inte följer någon som helst standard och kräver ett kassettdäck med avancerade inställningsmöjligheter för bias, eq och sensitivitet. Möjligtvis om du hittar en gammal TDK KR, som faktiskt innehåller kromdioxid, men de är väldigt sällsynta.

ist das Gerät auf die DIN-Referenzbänder eingemessen, also noch bevor IEC I, II usw. international genormt wurden. Die Cassetten, welche den DIN-Bändern am nächsten kommen, sind:

Für Normalposition würde ich die Agfa, für Chrom die BASF und für Ferrochrom Sony verwenden, weil das die jeweils problemlosesten und langzeitstabilsten sind. Aber man nimmt ja, was die Flohmärkte hergeben.

TDK-Bänder geben wahrscheinlich weniger natürliche Klangwiedergabe auf dem Gerät, gerade die SA-X, welche sich an keine Norm hält und ein Deck mit umfangreichen Einmeßfunktionen erfordert. Vielleicht funktioniert die TDK KR, die noch mit Chromdioxid beschichtet ist, aber die sind ziemlich rar.

Thank you for your information Kirunavaara! There is three different settings on the CG-350. Cr02, FeCr and FeCr Autom.
On my other player the CG-340 I can choose from: Bias High, Type Cr, EQ 70 us. Bias Mid FeCr EQ 70 us. Bias low, Type Fe, EQ 120us.
I like the TDK and I have some left of SA-X that I like to try but maybe there is better options.

I am also looking for a owners manual, not service manual but no luck so far.

The CG 350 should internally have three different settings, as you described. The front panel switch has only 2 positions, where the "Fe/Cr Automatic" position automatically sets it to either Normal or Chrome position, depending on the detection notches on the inserted cassette. As ferrichrome cassettes usually are coded the same way as normal/type I casssettes, this position needs to be selected manually.

Of course you can try the SA-X tapes on this machine. There are no risks. Maybe you even like the alteration of the frequency response they will give you when recorded on a deck that is adjusted to a completely different reference tape. But try without using Dolby first. The deviation between the old DIN reference tape's sensitivity and SA-X's sensitivity will inevitably lead to pumping sound artifacts.

I got a answer back on my question to the http://www.vintagecassetees.com and Les told me that TDK SA would be a better choice for me.

SA will work better than SA-X on your Uher, because it is a single layer tape with flat frequency response, at least. Its sensitivity is still higher than the DIN reference tape, so be careful with Dolby. Make some test recordings and judge by your own hearing wether the results with and without Dolby sound fine for you or not. If yes, everything is fine, have fun. If not, try one of the 1970's pure chrome tapes listed above.
