Hi, I finally took the time to do a little comparison of the Basf 353 Studio audio cassettes.
First I will start with the Type II.
I compared the tape's appearance and color to the 1996 Maxell XLII and 1996 XLII-S to the Basf CR Studio.
The XLII-S and Studio seem almost identical, but the XLII-S seems slightly lighter to me, the XLII is really almost black.
The odds on the XLII-S are good, but I'm not quite sure, the Sony TC-KE600S tape deck wasn't good with it, I had to use the Akai. I don't know how the Sony behaves with the real Maxell XLII-S though.
Type IV Basf Studio, That's CDIVF and Maxell MX-S.
There I have safely ruled out the Maxell in using the Basf.
Basf Studio is almost identical to That's CDIVF, the tape in both audiotapes is a flat, fairly light grey.
The Maxell is twisted, distinctly black.
Another interesting fact is all the MX-S tapes I'm familiar with that I've had in my hands show side light bleed through on the tape spool, apparently due to the use of a different base tape film, which is listed in the 1996 Maxell catalog technical data sheet.

It says dual-layer carrier film for the XLII-S and MX-S models.
Based on this, I'm excluding MX-S from Basf Studio cassettes, and I'm also excluding it from Basf TPIV cassettes, which will probably have the cheaper Maxell MX tape.
The Basf Studio shell is indeed heavier than the That's CDIVF itself.
