Welcome to the BBS. I’m also not an real expert of the GX-77, but I have one. The Akai GX-77 uses one motor to handle the loading roller and the speed of the tape together. You will see it in case you switch from one speed selection to another. Anyway, I think your problem deals with this motor and or the electronic that controls it. It could also happen that the master belt maybe it is dried out or slippery. If you open the machine, you can check the big flat belt of the machine easily. Its the one from the small pulley to the big steel reel. Sometimes this belts moves from the pulley to the motor axle. If the 3 belts (two other for each real side) of the machine are older than 10 years it will be a good idea to change it at first. If the belts are ok and the fault is still occurs you have to check the drive board of the motor. Please look into another thread of this board and you will find a circuit diagram of it. It is well set with voltage values. If you have a voltage meter, you can check it. Let me know you checking results, than we can look further.
