weitgehend falsch, denn eine "Masse" wie heute gab es damals längst noch nicht!
die Kunst- und Kammermusik war einer dünnen Oberschicht aus Adel, Beamten- und Bürgertum vorbehalten, mit zwei Ausnahmen, nämlich der Kirchenmusik und der Volks-Oper in der Vorstadt wie im Freihaustheater, für das die "Zauberflöte" geschaffen wurde; Notendrucke oder Kopisten-Abschriften ließen sich aber nur an Kenner verkaufen, die selbst als Amateure musizierten
Bearbeitungen (es gab ja kein Urheberrecht) erreichten noch am ehesten ein etwas breiteres Publikum, auch in Wirtshäusern oder bei Volksfesten, und dann gab es natürlich auch noch Musikautomaten in Kuriositätenkabinetten
Wenn das "Populare" gemeint war, dann aber so, daß damit auch die unkundigen Liebhaber erreicht werden sollten, aber längst keine breite Masse; umgekehrt schafften es Volkslieder und Volkstänze in die Kunstmusik einzugehen (z. B. "Acht Sauschneider müssen sein" bei Haydn und Mozart oder "Ach du lieber Augustin" bei Paul Wranitzky oder die "Mödlinger Tänze", die Beethoven zugeschrieben werden)
das bürgerliche öffentliche Konzertleben entstand erst im 19. Jahrhundert, dann folgte die Arbeitermusikbewegung, doch vermochten schließlich die Tonkonserve und der Rundfunk immer breitere Publikumsschichten zu erreichen, bis dann nach 1945 ausreichend Kaufkraft auch bei jungen Leuten vorhanden war
