There is a point where too little tension will impede HF response, but too much tension (besides wearing down your heads and tape faster) will cause excessive higher order distortion in the reproduced signal. I have not yet figured out precisely why, but it happens. Also the noise from the tape is going to get worse, but thats simply because of the dragging on the guide surfaces and the heads themselves. Its all a fine balance if you really want to go proper about it. I am pretty sure that the A700 was set from the meanufacturing correctly s no need to touch the springs
