I have a tascam 38 and I use the SM911 tape on it or the SM468 (when I get my hands on them on ebay or other websites).
You can try Ampex 456 but the tape you find on the internet are usually sticky (ampex 456 is very famous for becoming sticky). The Quantegy 456 was produced later and is a very good tape.
After a big problem with my tascam I changed to SM911 tape, it is still the best tape to use.

Concerning the Maxell tapes: Maxell did have a profi tape, called UD50-10R. This tape usually comes in the 1/2 format but I don't know if they made a 1/4 format of this tape. This tape is really excellent to use on any professional gear like tascam.
