The CG 350 should internally have three different settings, as you described. The front panel switch has only 2 positions, where the "Fe/Cr Automatic" position automatically sets it to either Normal or Chrome position, depending on the detection notches on the inserted cassette. As ferrichrome cassettes usually are coded the same way as normal/type I casssettes, this position needs to be selected manually.
Of course you can try the SA-X tapes on this machine. There are no risks. Maybe you even like the alteration of the frequency response they will give you when recorded on a deck that is adjusted to a completely different reference tape. But try without using Dolby first. The deviation between the old DIN reference tape's sensitivity and SA-X's sensitivity will inevitably lead to pumping sound artifacts.
